US Working “Furiously” on Panama Trade Pact

According to US Trade Representative Ron Kirk, the Obama Administration is working “furiously” to hammer out a final version of a free trade agreement with Panama. From Reuters:

    “We’re working furiously to finalize the Panama free trade agreement,” Kirk told the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

    “We have had very productive discussions on both labor and international tax issues and our efforts are continuing,” he said.

    U.S. trade officials were in Panama last week for talks.

This news comes as the first congressional hearing on the Panama Free Trade Agreement is to be held Thursday by the Senate Finance Committee.

GFI Director Raymond Baker to Testify Before House Financial Services Committee

Global Financial Integrity (GFI) Director Raymond Baker will testify before the U.S. House of Representatives as part of a hearing on capital loss, corruption and the role of western financial institutions.

The hearing will examine how corruption drains revenue out of emerging economies and examine ways to combat corruption and keep illicit capital flight from exiting developing countries.

GFI director Raymond Baker will discuss the findings of a December 2008 GFI analysis of illicit financial flows out of developing countries and make recommendations for U.S. and international policies which could substantially curtail illicit cross-border flows of capital.

US Senate Finance Committee to hold hearings on Panama Free Trade Agreement

The US Senate Finance Committee just announced that it will be holding hearings on the controversial Panama Free Trade Agreement. The trade pact could have significant implications for tax evasion.

According to the Committee’s website, Everett Eissenstat, the assistant U.S. trade representative for Western Hemisphere affairs, and representatives from the business and labor communities are expected to testify.

Welcome to the new website for the Task Force on Financial Integrity and Economic Development.

Founded in January 2009, the Task Force is a global coalition of civil society organizations and more than 50 governments – all working together to address inequalities in the financial system that penalize billions of people.

As such the Task Force advocates five priorities: curtailment of mispricing in trade imports and exports; country-by-country accounting of sales, profits, and taxes paid by multinational corporations; confirmation of beneficial ownership in all banking and securities accounts; automatic cross-border exchange of tax information; and harmonization of predicate offenses under anti-money laundering laws. Together, these steps will greatly increase transparency.
