Job Description and Person Specification: Assistant Policy Advisor Forests, Land and Climate – based in Global Witness DC Office
Reporting to: Senior Policy Advisor (Forest, Land and Climate)
Purpose of the post
Global Witness carries out investigative field work, policy development and direct advocacy with governments and international financial institutions around natural resource governance issues and related conflict, human rights abuse and environmental degradation. The Washington DC-based Assistant Policy Advisor on Forests, Land, and Climate will help the U.S. office of Global Witness expose how poor governance of forests and land in developing countries, including corruption, mismanagement and vested interests, contributes to the degradation of forests and other ecosystems, the loss of rural livelihoods, increased conflict and human rights violations, and climate change. The Assistant Policy Advisor will assist the Global Public Goods team in carrying out desk- and field-based research on forest and land issues in developing countries and translating findings into policy asks and advocacy targeted at decision makers in national producer and consumer governments and multi-lateral institutions.

Job Description: The European Network on Debt and Development works for social and economic justice through research and advocacy work to improve European Union institutions, other international organisations, and European government policies and practices on finance for developing countries. Its focus areas as of now are aid effectiveness, tax and development, responsible finance and debt cancellation, and the role of private finance in development. The network office in Brussels employs 7 people who assist its 57 network member groups across Europe to understand and intervene in current policy debates. Office staff undertake information-sharing, research and advocacy, and organise meetings with NGOs, officials and others. The work is carried out in close ooperation with networks in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The director manages a busy small team, ensuring high quality research outputs and good communication of key messages to target audiences in official institutions and NGOs. The work involves planning, fund-raising and reporting as well as writing and editing. The director represents the network at meetings with senior decision-makers, and facilitates meetings of network members to agree joint positions and actions. This is a challenging position, which requires the ability to provide direction across a broad network seeking to achieve change in vital policies that affect people across the world.

General Task Force Internship:
The Task Force on Financial Integrity and Economic Development (Task Force) is a unique global coalition of civil society organizations and more than 50 governments working together to address inequalities in the financial system that penalize billions of people. The Task Force advocates five priorities – curtailment of mispricing in trade imports and exports; country-by-country reporting of sales, profits, and taxes paid by multinational corporations; confirmation of beneficial ownership in all banking and securities accounts; automatic cross-border exchange of tax information; and harmonization of predicate offenses under anti-money laundering laws – each one focusing on transparency. The unpaid Task Force Intern reports to the Task Force Coordinator and the Task Force Outreach Coordinator. He/she must demonstrate initiative, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, solid writing abilities and an interest in development issues and the challenges facing poor countries.
In addition to developing an understanding of the Task Force priority issues, the Task Force intern will assist in the planning and coordination of the Annual Task Force conference. Other basic responsibilities include:
- Tracking news feeds, press mentions, and currents events about/related to Task Force Members and Allied Organizations
- Assist with management of Task Force Allied Organization database and outreach
- Assist Task Force Coordinator and Outreach Coordinator in day to day program management
Requirements include:
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite;
- Strong writing and research skills;
- Ability to successfully work independently with minimal supervision;Interest in capital flight and its effect on capitalism, development, and security
Preferred skills Non-English language skills, especially French and/or Spanish
- Experience with Microsoft Access
